The Horses for Heroes Program at Chastain Horse Park not only benefits those with physical disabilities but also those who suffer from psychological disabilities such as PTSD, depression and anxiety.  Many men and women return home from war with multiple injuries.  The benefits from therapeutic riding, also known as equine assisted activities, are all inclusive.   Many of our riders have been confined to a wheelchair since their injury occurred.   Riding a horse gives them the freedom to move without their wheelchair.  A horse's walk is much like a human's walk so when these riders are on the horse's back and they are walking, they have the same sensations that they would have if they were walking.  Therapeutic riding not only strengthens a riders core muscles but also improves balance and self esteem and gives them a greater sense of independence.

Non Mounted Lessons

Some of our riders are not medically able to ride a horse.  We have therapeutic activities that can be done with the horses that don't involve riding.  Our "barn" lessons include grooming the horses as well as discussions on horse behavior.  Grooming is a wonderful way to form a bond with a horse and that can be a very rewarding experience.

A Family Approach

In traditional clinical settings such as a hospital or rehabilitation facility, family members are usually not included in the therapy sessions .  We believe that the family is key to the success of their loved ones recovery and that is why we encourage the family to participate in the riding lesson.  Recovering from a catastrophic injury is not something that these brave men and women should have to face alone. Having the support and participation of their family is vital to a successful recovery.
